Parramatta, NSW: A growing community campaign is urging the City of Parramatta Council to deliver on its June 2024 resolution to build the long-awaited Welcome Gate / India Gate at Harris Park — and not replace it with four vertical sculpture pillars.
The proposal for pillars on Marion Street, introduced in July, has drawn sharp criticism from the Indian diaspora, who see the India Gate as a powerful cultural landmark that celebrates Harris Park’s reputation as “Little India.”
Federal Member for Parramatta, Dr Andrew Charlton MP, has thrown his weight behind the project, reaffirming that the Federal Government has already provided $3.5 million in dedicated funding for the India Gate.
“Little India is a special place and it deserves a gateway just like Chinatown. That’s why the Federal Government has provided $3.5 million to Parramatta Council to design and build the gate,” Dr Charlton said.
“Council has recently put forward a proposed design which isn’t really a gate. It’s a set of lights across Marion Street. I encourage everyone to have their say on the proposal – we want a gateway that puts Little India on the global map and stands as a source of pride for our local community.”

The petitioners are calling on the Lord Mayor and Councillors of Parramatta to:
Reject the four-pillar proposal.
Proceed with the India Gate, in line with the June 2024 resolution.
Engage with the Indian community to finalise a culturally significant design.
Ensure federal funds are used as intended — for the Gate, not alternatives.
Community leaders stress that the India Gate is more than just infrastructure — it is a bridge of friendship between India and Australia, and a cultural icon that will strengthen Harris Park’s place on the world map.

पैरामैटा के संघीय सांसद डॉ. एंड्रयू चार्लटन एमपी ने इस परियोजना के प्रति अपना समर्थन दोहराते हुए स्पष्ट किया कि संघीय सरकार पहले ही 3.5 मिलियन डॉलर की विशेष राशि इंडिया गेट के लिए आवंटित कर चुकी है।
“लिटिल इंडिया एक खास जगह है और इसे भी चाइनाटाउन की तरह एक गेटवे मिलना चाहिए। यही कारण है कि संघीय सरकार ने पैरामैटा काउंसिल को गेट के डिज़ाइन और निर्माण के लिए 3.5 मिलियन डॉलर प्रदान किए हैं,” डॉ. चार्लटन ने कहा।
