India Seeks Permission to Evacuate Students from Iran Amid Rising Conflict with Israel

New Delhi:
Amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, the Indian government has expressed concern for the safety of Indian students residing in Iran. Sources confirmed that India has formally requested permission from the Iranian government to relocate its students to Armenia as a precautionary measure.

Over 1,500 Indian students — many from Jammu & Kashmir — are currently studying in Iran, primarily in medical and other professional courses. The volatile security situation in the region has caused significant distress among the students’ families back home, prompting urgent diplomatic intervention.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has maintained close contact with the students in Iran and is reportedly coordinating with local Indian missions to monitor the situation closely. A government statement issued on Monday confirmed that some Indian students in Iran are being shifted to “safer locations” within the country, pending evacuation clearance.

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has personally spoken to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar regarding the safety of Kashmiri students stranded in Iran. Dr. Jaishankar assured him that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals, including students and workers, in Iran.

Several students, during an interview on an NDTV program, had made a direct appeal to the Indian government, requesting immediate evacuation efforts and assistance in returning home.

As the situation in the Middle East remains precarious, India’s proactive steps underscore the government's commitment to the welfare of its citizens abroad. The MEA is expected to issue further advisories as the situation develops.
