Harris Park is proudly known as Little India, the cultural and commercial hub of the Indian community in Sydney. This identity deserves respect and recognition through a landmark that reflects our heritage. However, Parramatta Council’s proposal to install just two poles on Marion Street and call them “Little India Gate” is deeply disappointing and unacceptable.
No Cultural Significance – Two plain poles cannot represent the grandeur of Indian heritage. From Delhi’s India Gate to Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, gateways across the world are built as lasting monuments – not makeshift poles.
Wrong Location – The true entrance to Little India is Wigram Street, near Malabar Jewellery. This is where visitors enter our precinct, where our shops, food, and culture begin. Anything else is misplaced and meaningless.
Flawed Design Process – The Council engaged a Pakistani artist (not a qualified architect) to come up with the design. No study was done of architectural gateways or arches built worldwide by professionals.
Ignored Community Voices – Our formal submission to the Mayor and Council was sidelined. The decision-making process has ignored the strong opposition of Harris Park’s businesses and residents.
We, as a united community, have written emails to the Mayor, to our local MPs, to the two Indian-origin Councillors, and to key community leaders urging them to take a stand on this issue. Their comments and support are awaited, but our collective voice must be loud and clear.
A real architectural gateway, designed by professional architects, inspired by world-class monuments.
The gateway must be constructed at Wigram Street, not Marion Street.

हैरिस पार्क सिडनी में भारतीय समुदाय की धड़कन है। यह सिर्फ बाज़ार नहीं, बल्कि हमारी संस्कृति, परंपरा और पहचान का प्रतीक है। लेकिन पैरामैटा काउंसिल की योजना – मेरियन स्ट्रीट पर केवल दो खंभे लगाकर उसे “लिटिल इंडिया गेट” कहना – हमारी पहचान का अपमान है।
संस्कृति का अपमान – दो खंभे भारतीय विरासत की भव्यता को नहीं दिखा सकते। पूरी दुनिया में प्रवेश द्वार हमेशा ऐतिहासिक और भव्य बनाए जाते हैं – जैसे दिल्ली का इंडिया गेट या पेरिस का आर्क द ट्रायम्फ।
गलत स्थान – लिटिल इंडिया का सही प्रवेश द्वार है विग्राम स्ट्रीट, मलाबार ज्वेलरी के पास। यहीं से दुकानों और संस्कृति का आरंभ होता है।
गलत डिजाइन प्रक्रिया – काउंसिल ने पाकिस्तान के एक कलाकार को चुना, जो आर्किटेक्ट नहीं है। उन्होंने कभी विश्व प्रसिद्ध गेट्स का अध्ययन नहीं किया।
समुदाय की आवाज़ को अनसुना किया गया – मेयर को भेजी गई हमारी सबमिशन को नजरअंदाज किया गया। हैरिस पार्क के व्यवसायियों और निवासियों की आवाज़ को दबा दिया गया।
हमने मेयर, स्थानीय सांसदों, दो भारतीय मूल के काउंसलरों और सामुदायिक नेताओं को ईमेल लिखकर इस मुद्दे पर टिप्पणी करने और समर्थन देने का अनुरोध किया है। उनकी प्रतिक्रिया का इंतज़ार है, लेकिन हमारी सामूहिक आवाज़ अभी बुलंद होनी चाहिए।
