In the wake of a growing controversy, New South Wales (NSW) Opposition Leader and Liberal Party chief Mark Speakman on Tuesday met representatives of the Indian community at the NSW Parliament and issued a formal apology.
The row erupted after Liberal Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price made remarks during an event that were widely condemned by members of the Indian-Australian community as “deeply hurtful.” The comments triggered outrage and calls for accountability from community leaders.
Under mounting pressure, Speakman invited Indian community leaders to the Parliament on Tuesday. During the meeting, he said:
“If any remarks have caused hurt to the Indian community, I sincerely apologise. The Indian community is a strength of Australia’s multicultural fabric, and its contribution is invaluable.”
The issue has placed Speakman and the Liberal Party in a difficult position, particularly because he had recently supported the fundraiser event at which Senator Price was the keynote speaker. The Labor Party and other critics have since questioned the Liberal leadership’s approach and consistency on sensitive multicultural issues.
Community representatives welcomed the apology as a positive step but stressed that they expect stronger action in the future to ensure such incidents do not recur. They urged all political parties to reaffirm their commitment to respecting and protecting Australia’s multicultural values.
न्यू साउथ वेल्स (NSW) की राजनीति में जारी विवाद के बीच मंगलवार को एक अहम घटनाक्रम हुआ। लिबरल पार्टी के नेता और एनएसडब्ल्यू के विपक्ष के नेता मार्क स्पीकमैन ने सिडनी स्थित संसद भवन में भारतीय समुदाय के प्रतिनिधियों से मुलाक़ात की और औपचारिक तौर पर माफ़ी मांगी।
कुछ दिन पहले लिबरल सीनेटर जेसिंटा नाम्पिजिन्पा प्राइस ने एक कार्यक्रम के दौरान ऐसा बयान दिया था, जिसे भारतीय मूल के ऑस्ट्रेलियाई नागरिकों ने “गहरी चोट पहुँचाने वाला” बताया। बयान पर व्यापक नाराज़गी जताई गई और समुदाय ने इसे अस्वीकार्य करार दिया।
विवाद के दबाव के बीच स्पीकमैन ने मंगलवार को भारतीय समुदाय के नेताओं को संसद में आमंत्रित किया। बैठक में उन्होंने कहा,
“अगर हमारे किसी साथी के बयान से आपकी भावनाएँ आहत हुई हैं तो मैं दिल से माफ़ी मांगता हूँ। भारतीय समाज ऑस्ट्रेलिया की ताक़त है और बहुसांस्कृतिक ढांचे में उसका योगदान अद्वितीय है।”
स्पीकमैन का यह कदम उनकी पार्टी पर बढ़ते दबाव के बीच आया है। खासतौर पर इसलिए कि प्राइस जिस फंडरेज़र कार्यक्रम की मुख्य वक्ता थीं, उसमें खुद स्पीकमैन ने भी भागीदारी की थी। लेबर और अन्य विपक्षी दलों ने इस मामले पर लिबरल पार्टी की नेतृत्व क्षमता पर सवाल खड़े किए हैं।
भारतीय समुदाय के कई प्रतिनिधियों ने कहा कि माफ़ी एक सकारात्मक शुरुआत है, लेकिन वे चाहते हैं कि भविष्य में इस तरह की विवादास्पद टिप्पणियों पर तुरंत कार्रवाई हो और सभी राजनीतिक दल बहुसांस्कृतिक समाज के प्रति अपनी प्रतिबद्धता को और मज़बूत करें।
